Carl Walters has been involved in the water and natural resource management industries in northern Victoria for almost 35 years and currently manages the Sustainable Irrigation Program for the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority. His extensive background in the irrigation industry has helped provide a different perspective to operations within the GB CMA.

He has a key focus on real partnerships, putting research and new knowledge into practice on the ground and the continued promotion of improved irrigation practices that will allow the region meet the demands of increased food production, climate change and competing demands for water.

Carl currently is a member Committee for the Irrigation Australia Limited’s National Committee of Irrigation and Drainage and is also the Deputy Chair of the International Committee for Irrigation and Drainage Work Group on Sustainable On-Farm Development.

Abstract Outline: The presentation of this paper will include information to illustrate and describe the objectives of the Farm Water Program and the background leading to the development of the Program.

The paper will demonstrate how Farm Water Program staff work with irrigators to prepare and implement projects to improve the farm irrigation systems.

The presentation will include examples of the works being undertaken by irrigators, the water savings generated from these activities.

This will include Farm Water Program data regarding the areas and costs of the different types of technologies implemented in the projects.

The presentation will also provide an analysis of the Final Reports submitted by irrigators at the conclusion of the projects including irrigators’ assessments of the water savings being achieved and the impact of the changes on their enterprise.
