Steve spent 17 years working for CSIRO.  During that time, his focus was developing an understanding of how much water sugarcane uses, and irrigation management to maximize sugarcane productivity and profitability, as well as the water quality impacts.  In 2013, Steve formed a consultancy, AgriTech Solutions, that has worked on several water and irrigation related areas including automation of surface irrigation, improving energy efficiency and reducing energy costs of irrigation, irrigation system design, and building smarter irrigation systems.

Abstract Outline: Burdekin Productivity Services Ltd (BPS) has been using a web-based crop model to underpin its irrigation scheduling extension program. BPS are using IrrigWeb to assist farmers gain a better understanding of irrigation timing and crop water use. Across the district there is a tendency to over-irrigate young crops, and farmers have little understanding about how much water a sugarcane crop uses. BPS are using IrrigWeb to support extension programs aimed at increasing irrigator understanding, while increasing productivity and reducing water and energy costs. Supporting farmers to use tools such as IrrigWeb will also assist farmers attain their Smartcane BMP accreditation.
The presentation will describe how IrrigWeb generates irrigation schedules, the information generated, and the extension program being used by BPS to increase use of tools like IrrigWeb
