Michael Smit is the Technical and Sustainability Manager at Kingspan Environmental and previously the Executive of the Rainwater Harvesting Association of Australia. Michael has a science background and previously worked in water conservation, natural resource management, and strategic and statutory land use planning. Michael believes Cities are integrated environmental, social and economic systems and all our actions should improve how urban systems perform. Michael has an Honors degree in urban planning and qualifications in economics, urban design, urban horticulture and philosophy.

Abstract Outline: This design specification is a joint project between the Rainwater Harvesting Association of Australia and Urban Water Cycle Solutions in 2017. The specification is for above ground rainwater harvesting systems connected to residential dwellings in urban areas. The specification is for a dual water supply, using mains water and rainwater sourced from roof catchments. The specification is applicable for use for outdoor, toilet, laundry and hot water supply. The Specification treats rainwater harvesting as an integrated system and describes optimal design for roofs, gutters, treatment, tanks, pumps, bypass systems and associated issues. The Specification is based on industry advice and independent research and does not promote any brand or product.
